Travellers on Barnes Common
- Created on Saturday, 02 November 2013 14:50
At 2pm on Friday 4th October a group with nineteen caravans broke into the field off Mill Hill Road, to the east of Common Road. They had been evicted from Putney Heath, leaving mess there which could cost £10,000 to clear.
Because they broke the gate and because of the numbers involved – and thanks to very swift and forceful work by our local police team and the Council – eviction notices were served within two hours, and the travellers left at about 8pm. I cannot praise the effort by the police and Council highly enough; action was well in hand before most of us were aware of the travellers’ arrival.
Olympic recording studios to re-open as cinema
- Created on Sunday, 29 September 2013 18:47
We’ve been waiting a long time, but the new cinema, restaurant and members’ club at the iconic Olympic Studios will open on 14th October!
The Olympic will cater to a wide range of tastes and ages, with Saturday morning cinema for children, mother and baby screenings, cast and crew Q&As, preview screenings and alternative content. Screen 1, a 120-seat luxury cinema, will show a wide variety of the latest releases from critically acclaimed features to big budget 3D spectaculars, featuring the very latest in digital projection and sound. Screen 2, with sixty-five seats, will open later, offering a broader, more diverse repertoire of films with documentaries, world cinema, classics, director retrospectives and independent cinema.
The Olympic Café and Dining Room will be a friendly, welcoming neighbourhood restaurant, open to all from 8am to 11pm. The food served will be predominantly British with a little European influence, focusing on great, seasonal local produce. A feature of the cafe and dining room will be the visible ‘Pastry Kitchen’ which will change throughout the day moving from pancakes and waffles in the morning to pies, homemade sausage rolls and savoury tarts later in the day.
